40 Hours in Athens

After two easy flights and an uneasy cab ride (think "Gran Turismo"), Josh and I arrived safely in Athens. Our first impression of this criticized city? We like it. I was here over 10 years ago and it's evident the city's come a long way - probably thanks to the Olympics although some would argue the legacy has left more bad than good. We spent a fun two nights adjusting to European time while diving headfirst into Greek food and culture.

Highlights:

Our dog. Yes, it only took a few hours for us to adopt a stray dog. We named him Mr. Mario - that's another story. He followed us from outside our hotel to the top of the Acropolis. We spent more time trying to find a water bowl for him than soaking in one of the wonders of the ancient world!

The Acropolis. This is my kind of hike, a slow steady climb to stunning monuments and striking city views. Still impresses me the second time seeing it. You can't help but be in awe of this amazing fortress that peers over Athens.

The meat market. I think this photo says enough. Yep, those are tails and furry paws.

I could go on about Athens really.

Recommendations:

*Stay at the Attalos Hotel, on Athinias right near Monastirakiou Square. Our balcony had a view of the Acropolis. The location was perfect, walking distance to everywhere.
*Eat in the Psiri area, definitely a little grungy but tons of great restaurants with sidewalk seating, reasonable prices and good entertainment. Thank you Mr. Mario.
*Walk around Plaka, really cute little side streets with boutique stores and cafes. You can wander for hours.

Santorini, here we come!
